Athens Skyline at Sunset: Lycabettus Panorama

The panorama from Lycabettus at sunset is really a view of two directions in time at once — one pointing at where Athens' stone came from, the other at where it's going.

Looking toward Mount Penteli, northeast of the city, you're looking at the source of the Parthenon itself: ancient quarries on Penteli's southern slope supplied an estimated 20,000 tons of marble for its construction, hauled downhill along a route that still roughly traces the modern road into Athens. Pentelic marble has a high iron content that gives it an unusual property — it develops a warm golden patina with age and light, which is the actual physical reason the Acropolis appears to glow at sunset rather than just looking pale and stony.

Looking the other way, toward the coast, the view includes something considerably newer: the site of the old Ellinikon International Airport, closed since 2001 and now in the middle of one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in Europe. Rising from it is Riviera Tower, designed by Foster + Partners — Greece's first residential skyscraper and, at 200 metres, set to become the country's tallest building when it completes in 2026.
