Athens Walk: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Day/Night

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) sits on a stretch of reclaimed coastline in Kallithea, between central Athens and the sea, on what used to be the city's old hippodrome. It was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and built entirely with funding from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, a private philanthropic organization, before being handed over to the Greek state.

The complex houses two of Greece's major cultural institutions under one site: the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. Both buildings sit beneath a vast tilted green roof — one of the largest of its kind when it opened — that doubles as an elevated park with views stretching from the Acropolis to the Saronic Gulf.

Around the buildings, a long canal and reflecting pool lead down a gentle slope toward an esplanade facing the sea, lined with Mediterranean pine trees. In winter the park becomes one of Athens' main Christmas destinations, with an outdoor ice rink and light displays drawing crowds well after dark — the same nighttime scene this walk captures, in contrast with the quieter daytime visit earlier in the video.
