Athens to Heraklion Ferry: Aegean Sea Journey

The ferry route from Piraeus, the port of Athens, to Heraklion is one of the most travelled domestic sea connections in Greece. It links the mainland directly to Crete's largest city, carrying both everyday travelers and vehicles across the Aegean.

The crossing is typically run overnight — departing Piraeus in the evening and arriving in Heraklion the following morning, a journey of several hours across open water. The two main operators on this route, Minoan Lines and ANEK Lines, run large car ferries with cabins, making the overnight schedule practical for passengers who want to sleep through most of the crossing.

Heraklion itself is the gateway to Crete — from the port, the island's beaches, the Minoan palace of Knossos, and the rest of the island's road network are all a short distance away. For many travelers, this ferry is the first and last thing they see of the mainland-to-island journey.
