Athens Sunset Techno at Lycabettus Hill

The venue behind this sunset set has been staging performances for longer than techno has existed. Lycabettus Theatre was built in 1964 on the site of an old stone quarry, designed by architect Takis Zenetos as a steel structure that still looks like it landed on the hillside rather than being built on it. It opened in 1965 with Sophocles' Antigone, and over the decades since has hosted more than a thousand concerts — Tina Turner, James Brown, Mikis Theodorakis among them — before a full restoration closed and reopened it in 2023.

The hill underneath it is older than any of that. At 277 metres, Lycabettus is the highest point in central Athens, and Greek mythology credits its existence to Athena, who is said to have dropped it mid-flight while carrying it toward the Acropolis. One popular theory traces the name itself to "lykos" — wolf — from a time the slopes were supposedly roamed by them. Near the summit sits the Chapel of St. George, rebuilt in 1834 by a monk who climbed the hill, cleared its ruins, and dedicated the site to a different saint than the one it had originally honored.

What this video captures is one night in that long history: an open-air set during the "This Is Athens" festival, laser light cutting across the dusk, and the entire city spread out below as the sky turns from gold to violet — the same view that's been drawing people up this hill since long before there was a theatre, or a chapel, or a city to look down on.
