Cologne Christmas Markets 2026: Four Magical Markets to Explore on Foot
Four of Germany’s most beloved Christmas markets lie within an easy walk of one another in Cologne. From the glow of the cathedral to a fairytale old-town market and a Ferris wheel above the Rhine, here’s how to experience them all in one unforgettable evening.

Watch the videoSome cities celebrate Christmas with a market. Cologne turns the entire season into an invitation to explore.
From mid-November, the historic centre begins to glow with festive lights. Wooden stalls fill the squares, the scent of mulled wine drifts through the old town, and the magnificent silhouette of Cologne Cathedral becomes the backdrop to one of Germany’s most atmospheric winter traditions.
The best part? You don’t have to choose just one market.
Four of Cologne’s signature Christmas markets are close enough to combine in a single evening on foot. Begin beside the Rhine, wander through the old town’s historic squares, stand beneath the cathedral’s soaring twin towers, and finish beneath a canopy of sparkling stars at Neumarkt.
The dates for the 2026 season have been published by the organisers. Here’s where to go, when to visit, and how to make the most of a festive evening in Cologne.
1. Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market: Christmas Beneath the Gothic Spires
Roncalliplatz · 16 November–23 December 2026
If you visit only one Christmas market in Cologne, make it this one.
Set directly beneath the monumental towers of Cologne Cathedral, the Cathedral Christmas Market is the city’s defining festive spectacle. More than 120 decorated stalls surround the square, while the central stage hosts over 100 free events throughout the season.
The setting is extraordinary. Completed in 1880 according to its medieval design, the cathedral rises approximately 157 metres above the city. Its soaring Gothic architecture, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, gives the market a sense of grandeur that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Come as dusk settles and the illuminated cathedral emerges against the evening sky. Browse the stalls, discover seasonal gifts, and pause to take in the view before following the narrow streets into the old town.
Want to experience the setting beyond the Christmas crowds? Our Cologne Cathedral walking tour approaches the same square from Hansaring and continues inside the cathedral, offering another perspective on one of Germany’s most recognisable landmarks.
One practical detail for winter visitors: since July 2026, sightseeing inside the cathedral costs €12, while entry for prayer and religious services remains free. Read more in our guide to Cologne Cathedral’s new entry fee. The Christmas market itself is free to enter.
2026 dates: Monday, 16 November–Wednesday, 23 December.
Opening hours:
- Sunday–Wednesday: 11:00–21:00
- Thursday–Friday: 11:00–22:00
- Saturday: 10:00–22:00
Please note: The market is closed on Sunday, 22 November, for Totensonntag, Germany’s day of remembrance for the dead.
Don’t miss it: Visit after dark, when the cathedral and the market lights create the unforgettable scene that makes Cologne such a special Christmas destination.
2. Heinzels Wintermärchen: A Fairytale in Cologne’s Old Town
Alter Markt and Heumarkt · 23 November 2026–10 January 2027, depending on the square
A short stroll through the old town brings you to Heinzels Wintermärchen, a Christmas market inspired by one of Cologne’s most charming legends.
The name refers to the Heinzelmännchen — mythical house gnomes said to have secretly completed the townspeople’s work at night. According to the tale, their helpful visits came to an end when a tailor’s wife scattered peas on the stairs in an attempt to catch them. August Kopisch’s 1836 poem helped make the story famous.
Today, the legend gives this market a character all its own. The historic squares of Alter Markt and Heumarkt become a festive world of wooden stalls, seasonal treats and winter attractions, inviting visitors to linger rather than hurry on to the next stop.
Both sections open on Monday, 23 November 2026, but their closing dates differ.
Alter Markt: The Historic Heart
Alter Markt runs until 23 December 2026. Its old-town surroundings make it a natural stop between the cathedral and the riverside, particularly if you want to combine festive browsing with a walk through Cologne’s historic streets.
Heumarkt: The Winter Ice Rink
Heumarkt stays open much longer, through Sunday, 10 January 2027. Its outdoor ice rink is arranged in a loop around the square’s equestrian monument, adding a lively winter spectacle to the historic setting.
The market and rink are scheduled to remain open throughout the festive period, except on 24 and 25 December.
Heumarkt opening hours:
- Daily: 11:00–22:00
- From 31 December: 11:00–21:00
Why stay longer? If you want your Cologne Christmas evening to include more than browsing stalls, Heumarkt is the place to slow down, watch the skaters and soak up the atmosphere. It is also one of the few major markets in the city where the festive season continues well into January.
3. Markt der Engel: A Canopy of Stars at Neumarkt
Neumarkt · 16 November–23 December 2026
For a more romantic side of Cologne at Christmas, head to Markt der Engel — the Angels’ Market — at Neumarkt.
A canopy of star-shaped lights stretches above the pathways, bathing the stalls in a soft glow. Costumed angels move among the visitors, adding a touch of theatrical magic to the scene. It is a market made for slow evening walks, festive photographs and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by light on a winter night.
The atmosphere feels different from the grand spectacle of the cathedral square. Here, the appeal lies in the details: the illuminated canopy, the decorated stalls and the way the lights transform an ordinary city square into an intimate seasonal setting.
Markt der Engel runs from 16 November to 23 December 2026. Like the Cathedral Christmas Market, it closes on Sunday, 22 November, for Totensonntag.
Opening hours:
- Sunday–Thursday: 11:00–21:00
- Friday–Saturday: 11:00–22:00
The perfect moment: Arrive after sunset, when the starry canopy comes into its own. If you’re ending your walk here, give yourself time to explore rather than treating the market as a quick final stop.
4. Cologne Harbour Christmas Market: Festive Lights Beside the Rhine
Chocolate Museum · 13 November 2026–3 January 2027
For a different perspective on Cologne at Christmas, begin — or end — your evening beside the Rhine.
The Harbour Christmas Market, set directly in front of the Chocolate Museum, combines a riverside setting with a distinctly maritime atmosphere. Around 70 wooden stalls create a festive village beside the water, while a 48-metre Ferris wheel rises above the market.
The river adds another dimension to the experience. As the lights come on, their reflections shimmer across the water, creating a scene that feels very different from the crowded squares around the cathedral.
The Harbour Christmas Market is scheduled to open on Friday, 13 November 2026, making it the earliest of the four markets featured in this guide. It will continue until Sunday, 3 January 2027.
The organisers have not yet published the daily opening hours for the 2026 season, so check the official website before planning your visit.
Why go? Come for the Rhine views, the Ferris wheel and the chance to experience Cologne’s festive season from the waterfront. If you love cities that look especially beautiful after dark, this is a market worth putting on your list.
The Perfect Cologne Christmas Market Walk
Four markets. One evening. A city transformed by Christmas lights.
One of Cologne’s greatest advantages is how easily its main markets fit together. Rather than spending your entire evening in one square, you can experience four distinct settings in a single walking route.
Allow extra time for browsing, food stops, photographs and crowds. The walk is short; the temptation to linger is not.
- Stop 1 — Harbour Christmas Market (Chocolate Museum · Start by the Rhine): Begin beside the river, where the Ferris wheel, wooden stalls and reflections on the water set the mood for the evening.
- Stop 2 — Heinzels Wintermärchen (Heumarkt and Alter Markt · Old Town): Head into the historic centre to discover Cologne’s gnome-inspired Christmas market. If the ice rink is calling, leave extra time for Heumarkt.
- Stop 3 — Cathedral Christmas Market (Roncalliplatz · Beneath the Gothic towers): Continue to the cathedral for the city’s signature Christmas scene, with more than 120 stalls framed by one of Europe’s most impressive Gothic landmarks.
- Stop 4 — Markt der Engel (Neumarkt · Finish beneath the stars): End the evening beneath the glowing canopy of star-shaped lights, with time to enjoy the market’s more romantic atmosphere.
The complete route takes well under half an hour of walking without stops, covering approximately two kilometres from the riverside to Neumarkt. In practice, the markets deserve considerably more time.
Planning a late-November visit? Dates matter. The Harbour Christmas Market opens on 13 November, while the Cathedral market and Markt der Engel begin on 16 November. Heinzels Wintermärchen follows on 23 November. After 24 December, the Harbour market and Heumarkt are the two featured destinations scheduled to continue into the new year.
