Eden Beach, Palaio Faliro: Empty During COVID Lockdown

Eden Beach — Paralia Edem — isn't some remote resort; it's an organized city beach in Palaio Faliro, close enough to central Athens that the T6 tram runs straight there from Syntagma, stopping right at Edem station a short walk from the sand. Normally it's a proper urban beach setup — sunbeds, showers, a lifeguard, a playground — sitting a few minutes down the coast from Batis Beach, popular precisely because it doesn't require a car or a day trip. This clip catches it doing the opposite of what it was built for.

Greece moved unusually fast into lockdown. The country's first confirmed case was on 26 February 2020; by 12 March, theatres, gyms, and courthouses were closed; the next day it was shopping centers, cafés, and restaurants; on 14 March, organized beaches — Eden Beach among them — were shut down entirely. A nationwide curfew followed on 23 March, and stayed in effect until early May. Greece's early, aggressive response is often credited with keeping its case numbers low relative to the rest of Europe that spring, but the visible cost of that speed is exactly what this footage shows: a city beach a tram ride from Syntagma, empty, in the middle of what should have been a normal week.
