Journey Timeline
Syntagma is one of Athens' three main squares, alongside Omonia and Monastiraki, and it's the political one — the square that sits in front of the Greek Parliament rather than a transit hub or a market. This live-style view catches its ordinary daily rhythm: pedestrians crossing, the fountain running, yellow taxis circling.
The building worth watching closest is on the square's north side: Hotel Grande Bretagne, a private house from 1842 that became a hotel in 1874. It has spent the century since being requisitioned by whoever happened to be running Greece at the time — Greek military headquarters during the 1940–41 war with Italy, Nazi headquarters during the occupation, then British headquarters the moment the Axis withdrew in 1944. That same year, on Christmas Day, resistance fighters planted explosives in its sewers intending to kill the British commanding general — and called the attack off only because Winston Churchill had just landed in Athens and was staying inside.
The avenue running along the square's east side, Vasilissis Amalias, is named for Queen Amalia, the first queen of modern Greece, who personally designed the National Garden bordering it between 1838 and 1840. The street was renamed in her honor at the garden's original entrance, near an avenue of twelve palm trees she planted herself.
This is what TravelHubCam is here to show you: not a monument frozen in the 1840s, but a square where a hotel changed owners with every occupying army and a queen's private garden became the city's public one.
