Journey Timeline
Piraeus is the port Athens built on purpose. In the early 5th century BC, the statesman Themistocles pushed Athens to fortify this rocky peninsula instead of relying on the open beach at Phaleron, and by 461 BC the city had gone further still, building the Long Walls โ six kilometres of fortification linking Athens to Piraeus so the city could be supplied and defended by sea even under siege.
What this stretch of water was actually for was war. Piraeus had three natural harbors โ Kantharos for trade, and Zea and Munichia built specifically as naval bases. At Zea alone, archaeologists have mapped shipsheds covering more than 55,000 square metres, built to house Athens' fleet of triremes; carbon dating on some of the earliest sheds lines up with the ships that fought at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. At its height the complex sheltered around 400 warships and employed tens of thousands of rowers, shipwrights, and rope-makers.
Zea is the harbor this video calls by its modern name: Pasalimani. The warships are gone, replaced by a marina full of private yachts, but the bay is the same one Themistocles fortified. A few hundred metres along the coast, past a small street market on Akti Moutsopoulou, the promenade continues to Freatida, a public beach that has nothing to do with ancient naval history and exists purely for people who want to swim.
This is what TravelHubCam is here to show you: not a monument, but a working harbor that spent its first few centuries building warships and has spent the ones since finding quieter things to do with the same water.
