New York Oculus & One World Trade Center Walk

One World Trade Center is exactly 1,776 feet and five inches tall, a height chosen deliberately to echo 1776, the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. Completed in 2014 by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the first stop on this walk, rising over the plaza where the original towers stood.

A short walk away sits the Oculus, the World Trade Center's transportation hub, which cost nearly four billion dollars to build and opened in 2016 — one of the most expensive train stations ever constructed anywhere. Architect Santiago Calatrava designed its roof as a pair of enormous hydraulic steel ribs that can open and close, deliberately modeled on a sketch of a child releasing a bird into flight. From outside, the structure reads as a stark white skeleton; inside, that same ribbed ceiling arcs overhead in a single unbroken vault of natural light, a deliberate contrast to the underground concourses most transit hubs settle for.

The Oculus does more than move commuters — PATH trains, several subway lines, and a shopping concourse all converge beneath it — but it was built first and foremost as a civic gesture: a building meant to be walked through and looked up at, not just passed through on the way to a platform.

From the Oculus, the walk continues into Lower Manhattan proper, where the scale changes abruptly — the same streets that once held the original World Trade Center complex give way to the older, narrower grid of the Financial District, laid out centuries before anyone imagined a tower nearly a third of a mile tall standing over it.
