Wall Street takes its name from an actual wall — a defensive palisade built by Dutch colonists in the 1640s to mark the northern edge of New Amsterdam, roughly where the street runs today. By the 19th century it had become the center of American finance, and it still is: the New York Stock Exchange has operated at 11 Wall Street since 1903.
A few doors down stands Trinity Church, whose current Gothic Revival building dates to 1846 — the third church on this site since the parish was founded in 1697. Its graveyard is the burial place of Alexander Hamilton, among other notable early Americans. Nearby, 40 Wall Street (long known as the Trump Building) briefly held the title of world's tallest building for about a month in 1930, before the Chrysler Building surpassed it just blocks away.
